Since the discovery in the 15th century and due to its geographical location, the Azores has always been part of the Atlantic routes and later the air routes. The evolution of the islands has been connected to them. People from different places and cultures arrived by sea, settled on São Miguel and started what is known now as the cultural Azorean legacy and identity.

The luxurious vegetation has contributed to the enrichment of the island throughout its various economic cycles. Due to its size, morphologic variety and creativity of its people São Miguel has made the most significant progress.
